Hi!  This is just a little bit about me-Emily Cano.  I live with my husband Justin, our two little boys Jasper and Sebastian, our dog Amelia and our cat Madeline.  We moved up to Alaska from Forks, Washington twelve years ago and have come to find so much beauty and enjoyment in this very unique place, we now call home.   I love animals, art, the outdoors, paddle boarding, traveling, cooking, creating, and I absolutely LOVE kids and teaching!  This will be my fourteenth-year teaching. I love making one of the very first impressions on a child of what it means to be a learner.  It is amazing to see the growth that children can make in just one year.  I have an important job not only to teach my students to read, write, understand math and be problem solvers, but also to ignite a joy and an early love of learning that these young students will carry with them through their lives.  I feel privileged to have such an important job and excited to be part of the Eagle River Elementary Optional Program!

I love the outdoors, and spend my summers fishing, climbing, hiking, paddle-boarding, camping, and ripping around in our ATV. In winter I love to snowboard, fat tire bike and sit by my backyard fire pit. I have 4 kids and a big goofy dog named Frankie. I love cooking for friends and family, and reading fantasy books. I also feel very lucky to absolutely LOVE my job.

I started my teaching career at an environmental education camp in Oregon when I was 17. The same camp I went to when I was in 6th grade! I spent 3 years teaching science in the woods and during that time developed a love for experiential learning opportunities and 6th graders! I moved to Alaska to work at a similar camp and start at the UAA College of Education. I student taught at Muldoon, was hired at Fairview and then spent the next 20 years teaching 3rd-6th grade at Ravenwood in Eagle River. My own kids are optional kids, so when they were lucky enough to have their names drawn I wanted to transfer with them. My first year at Eagle River I was the Ignite teacher, the following year I taught 5th grade on the neighborhood side, and now ⅚ optional! It’s my dream job. I’ve spent the summer training and planning for this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to bring a hands-on, project based, sometimes messy, but always memorable curriculum to my students.

I am an Alaskan, born and raised. As a 7th grader I was introduced to Open Optional when my parents enrolled me at Steller Secondary Open Optional. I have always been a maker, even before we called it that, and this was something I was able to pursue at Steller. Many of the things that I loved making flew. Whenever given a chance I built and flew model airplanes, kites and rockets during my time at Steller.
In high school I also became interested in the arts, both fine and performing. This lead me to study Journalism and Theater in collage. Before going back to school to become a teacher, I worked in television production. At the same time, I participated in local theater productions such as the 3 Barons’ Renaissance Fair. In the last 40 years I’ve acted, directed, been a costumer, and a playwright. For seventeen years at Muldoon Elementary I directed the Muldoon Quarter Ring Clown Brigade, a children’s clowning troupe.
I’ve also turned my hand to the fine arts, learning to draw, paint, and sculpt. I enjoy watercolor and acrylic painting, and trade miniature art pieces with other artists from around the world. To stretch my artistic skills I participate in art challenges, trying techniques and themes I may not have chosen on my own. It has been a rewarding endeavor.
Beside art I also love trying out various crafts. I sew, crochet, and felt (both wet and dry felting). As part of my wargaming addiction I paint miniature military figures. In the last few years I’ve returned to my interest in aviation by making and flying radio controlled aircraft. Even more recently I’ve returned to kitemaking.
This is part of who I am, and this gets wrapped into my teaching. I share my love of learning and creating with the children that I teach. It is my hope that this can help spark their interests and passions, and help them find the futures that they want.

After teaching at Eagle River, I taught at Ravenwood Elementary for ten years, all grades K- 6 as well as middle school model Science and Social Studies and then I was an Assistant Principal at four different Title I schools. During my time as an administrator, I have had so many wonderful experiences including working with the following programs; Life Skills, Sped Preschool, Neighborhood Preschool, Extended Resource, and the School Based Behavior Support (SBBS).

My goal is always to do what is best for students and my most important role is to be an advocate for the students. I am a Principal who likes to be visible on campus, throughout the building and in classrooms and look forward to spending a lot of time with your children, getting to know their personalities, learning styles and interests. I will celebrate their successes, small and large. I will encourage them every day and let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school community.  Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible experience at Eagle River Elementary!
